To secure the future of e-mobility, our industry must continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible. One way is to develop new high-performance solutions and test them under the toughest conditions - on the racetrack. This is exactly what Porsche did with their GT4 e-Performance race car, rewriting the rule book when it comes to all-electric performance.
Motorsports represents one of the most demanding environments an EV can be put in. The severity helps us test our latest technology under those types of conditions.
Our new 3-in-1 thermal management fluid has been engineered to meet the exacting needs of Porsche’s latest all electric racing car.
The car is helping to break new ground in electric vehicle sporting performance. It features a revolutionary cooling system and a drivetrain that can deliver a peak output of up to 800 kW (1,088 HP). Its 900-volt technology can take the battery from 20 to 80 percent charge in 15 minutes. These engineering innovations, and extreme racing conditions, place massive stresses on the vehicle’s thermal management system; demands that our new 3-in-1 thermal management fluid has been able to meet.
Teamwork makes the dream work
The development of such an ambitious new vehicle doesn’t happen in silo. A groundbreaking car needs groundbreaking components - including thermal management fluids. Our Electric Vehicle research team is already highly experienced in this unique field of lubricant R&D, our scientists and engineers are breaking new ground daily and development requires specialist teams from both Porsche and ExxonMobil to work together much more closely. It is particularly important that we work very closely and at an early stage with the battery and powertrain experts in order to develop optimal solutions.
“This new Mobil 1 fluid shows how, together, we’re testing and developing new concepts under the toughest conditions to find e-mobility solutions for the commercial production of tomorrow,”
Tobias Klande, ExxonMobil
“Our relationship with Mobil 1 is vital to the project. Our shared philosophy of track-to-road performance has extended with this new generation of vehicles from lab to track... to road. Achieved by close collaboration between Porsche and ExxonMobil."
Rüdiger Klutinus, Porsche team manager
2. Thermal management fluids
Our focus in EVs is on the optimal thermal management of all components. Regulating the heat in batteries, e-motors, and electronic systems is one of the most important engineering requirements if an electric vehicle is to achieve further, longer and safer performance.
Most battery systems use a mix of water and ethylene glycol - essentially common antifreeze. It is pumped through a metal plate that cools the battery pack, however it is not the most efficient method because it's indirect. Our suite of thermal management fluids allow for direct contact with electrical components to maximize cooling. This immersion improves temperature stability, battery safety and quick charging capability plus increases equipment life. Progressive OEMs are moving towards direct oil cooling.
One thermal management fluid for batteries, eMotor, and Power Electronics
Our new 3-in-1 thermal management fluid is our most advanced ever. It provides exceptional electric performance under extreme conditions, tested on the track. Porsche has described this advanced 3-in-1 product as ‘a game-changer’ in the development of their cutting-edge 718 Cayman GT4 e-Performance. The GT4 ePerformance would not be possible with water cooling. The direct contact of the oil with the components, where the heat is generated, is one of the decisive advantages of direct oil cooling and at ExxonMobil we have developed the oil for this.
"With the GT4 ePerformance, we offer a sophisticated test laboratory within development to try out new components. The immersion cooling is in the foreground with this vehicle - THE unique selling point of the vehicle."
Björn Förster, Project Manager of the GT4 ePerformance program
Mobil EV™ Therm Elite fluids are suitable for electric motor and power electronics direct cooling applications where a dedicated cooling loop is used for these components. Mobil EV™ Therm Elite fluids are dielectric which allows for direct contact with electrified components, direct contact with heated surfaces allows for maximum heat transfer and cooling.

Our thermal management fluids help to improve performance in electric vehicles:
Mobil EV™ boasts an incredibly powerful feature that truly sets it apart—exceptional thermal management. Our products help ensure the optimal regulation of heat is maintained in batteries, e-motors, and electronic systems, taking electric vehicle performance to a whole new level.
We demonstrated the capabilities of our fluids in a series of lab-based and real-world tests highlight the benefits of the Mobil EV™ Therm Elite Series. Results revealed that Mobil Therm Elite products delivers exceptional performance in battery thermal management.
Test 1: Immersive cooling nail penetration test
We penetrated a battery cell with a nail to test how Mobil EV immersive cooling performed in preventing a catastrophic engine incident compared to no immersive cooling.
Test 2 : Immersive cooling nail penetration test in a real-life battery system
As shown in the graph, this test within a Xing Mobility battery system proved that Mobil EV shielded the unpenetrated battery cells from the threat of thermal runaway achieving nearly 100% cell-to-coolant contact. The result: Mobil EV products passed the Xing Mobility nail penetration test on the Xing Immersion™ modular battery system.
Despite the searing heat of 279.7°C of the cell that was penetrated, the surrounding temperatures barely changed thanks to the effectiveness of Mobil EV's immersive cooling.
3. Gearbox fluids
Mobil EV™ Drive Series
The Mobil EV™ Drive Series is a range of high-performance, fully formulated lubricants, meticulously crafted for electric vehicle (EV) reduction gearboxes and transmissions. Carefully selected and blended molecules enhance both equipment and EV performance. They combat gearbox wear, paving the way for enhanced vehicle durability and a longer service life.
These lubricants empower electric vehicles to perform at their peak. EV driveline fluids must balance effective lubrication of a high speed gear set with overall minimized friction losses and improved traction efficiency.

Mobil 1 and Porsche in Formula E
Porsche introduced their first Formula E car to racing as one of the pioneers. In electric vehicles, there is a very high RPM gear box and so the gear oil can be a real difference-maker in terms of performance – and the gearbox and oils help reduce fluid traction losses and increase power delivery, while providing excellent efficiency.
By working together with Porsche engineers, we successfully designed an integrated an ultra-high efficiency gearbox and gear lube for the Porsche Formula E race car.
